Questions to ask when purchasing a kitten

Bringing a new kitten into your home is an exciting and deeply rewarding experience. A kitten will become part of your family for many years, so it’s important to take the time to find a responsible, caring breeder who places the health, temperament, and wellbeing of their cats first.

A reputable breeder will be happy to answer your questions openly and honestly. They should be passionate about their cats, knowledgeable about the breed, and genuinely interested in making sure their kittens are placed in loving, suitable homes. Asking thoughtful questions not only helps you make an informed decision, but also gives you confidence that your future companion has been raised with care and dedication.

  • Are you a fully registered Breeder?

  • Who are you registered with and does the price include pedigree papers issued by a valid cat registry?

  • Can I see current proof of registration?

  • What age do you let your kittens leave?

  • What vet work do you have done such as vaccination and desexing?

  • Do you desex prior to me getting my kitten

  • Do you give me any information on things to do with my new kitten such as food, worming, etc.

  • Do you offer ongoing support for the life of my kitten?

  • Do you DNA screen your breeding cats for PRA plus other genetic health problems?

  • Can you provide proof that they have been done.

  • Can I see pictures of mum and dad. (Note: it’s a good idea to meet the stud cat and check out his premises as that will give you a good idea on how the cats are kept) also how friendly the others cats are.
